Peter L. King, President of Lean Dynamics, has written three books and several articles describing how lean concepts and tools can be applied to process industry operations.
Productivity Press, June, 2015
Value Stream Mapping is a specific type of process mapping which is a cornerstone of Lean Production and Lean Supply Chain initiatives. Developed to facilitate continuous improvement in discrete parts assembly manufacturing (automobiles, refrigerators, cell phones), Value Stream Mapping must be enhanced to be fully effective in the production of personal care products, food and beverage, chemicals, and the like.
The book describes these enhancements based on King's 25 years of experience as a lean practitioner, with the DuPont Company and in private practice.
It includes examples of VSMs from real processes, and describes how they were used to improve operations.
Productivity Press, April, 2013
Product Wheels provide practical methods for finding the optimum sequence, balancing changeover costs with inventory costs, and freeing up useful capacity in multi-product operations. As a testament to its efficacy, the DuPont Company and Dow Chemical are just two of several companies that have employed the product wheel concept to achieve and sustain a competitive advantage.
This handbook defines a clear step-by-step process for designing, implementing, and operating Product Wheels.
It includes case studies describing successful wheel application at Appleton, Dow Chemical, DuPont, and other manufacturers.
New Edition of a Best Seller!
Productivity Press, June 2019
Productivity Press has recently published a second edition of my best-selling Lean for the Process Industries (2009). This is a very appropriate time for a second edition; the first edition was written shortly after I left DuPont and was largely based on my experiences there. In the ensuing 10 years, I have had the opportunity to apply these tools to companies that manufacture vitamin tablets, transmission and brake fluids, fabrics for sporting apparel, puddings and snack foods, salad dressings, and biological materials for human implant. These projects have given me a richer set of examples to cite and a broader perspective on how these concepts can be applied to meet a wider range of challenges.
