5S is a work process improvement tool that removes clutter from the work area, creates a workplace better organized for the tasks performed there, and is a key component in building cultural value for work standards
5S is so named because it is a five step process with each step beginning with the letter “S”.
SORT – Sort all material and equipment in the workplace and get rid of anything not needed to accomplish the value-adding tasks performed there.
SET – Set the remaining material and tools in the most appropriate location and position to facilitate the work being done.
SHINE – Clean the area, make it shine, paint surfaces a bright color. This is done not only to create a more pleasant environment and more efficient operations, but also so that any leaks, spills, or anything out of place becomes immediately visible.
STANDARDIZE – Develop procedures to make maintaining the improved arrangement part of standard work for each area.
SUSTAIN – Auditing procedures that insure that the gains are held and that the benefits continue to be realized.
Some dismiss 5S as simply a housekeeping tool, but it is much more than that. The discipline that 5S brings often translates to other areas and activities and can therefore be a powerful demonstration of the benefits of work standards.
